Alaska: International Yacht Charter Destination
Alaska, with its stunning natural beauty, is rapidly becoming one of the new “must-see” destinations on the yacht charter trail. There’s a growing trend toward international yachting charters venturing further afield beyond the traditional summer cruising grounds of the Med and New England in search of new experiences.
Most people would be forgiven for thinking that Alaska probably looks like the image on our TV screens of howling winds and brutal seas in “Deadliest Catch.” These are rare and your charter yacht captain certainly knows how to avoid them! Instead, you will feel as if you are the star of a nature show, as the wildlife that can be seen both on land and at sea is extraordinary. Depending on the time of year, you may see brown bears fishing for salmon with their paws, killer whales hunting in Prince William Sound, vast chunks of blue ice breaking away from glaciers into the sea, and soaring snow-capped peaks.
You also can find civilization on the state’s shores, but it should be said that if you are looking for upscale shopping malls featuring designer labels, this cruising destination probably is not for you. Charter holidays here are for those adventuresome souls who are more interested in exploring the wonders of the natural world.
The weather can be unpredictable, there are no guarantees you will see everything you hope to see, and the chances of getting a suntan are limited. Nevertheless, catching the sight of a humpback whale or a pod of orca, and witnessing the incredible power of nature, make a charter in Alaskan waters a rare privilege.
Each day should start with …
‘What do you want to do today?’

Here’s a hot tip FROM ONE OF OUR CHARTER EXPERTS ABOUT YOUR ALASKA YACHT CHARTER:
The Iditarod is called “The Last Great Race” (www.iditarod.com). Each year, it starts in Anchorage on the first Saturday in March. The race ends when the last musher reaches Nome. While it takes these four-legged ultimate athletes between 9 to 12 days to finish the entire race, you can get a taste of this historical event with a Dog Sled Tour during your charter vacation. There are multiple companies offering packages out of areas such as Juneau. Your charter yacht captain will make all the arrangements. First you’ll soar in a helicopter over glaciers, then touch down at a dog camp. Learn the history of the Iditarod, hear the mushers’ firsthand experience, and then your Alaskan Huskies will dash across snowfields as you yell “Mush!, Mush!”
