International Yachting Destination: Italy’s Amalfi Coast

Take a yacht along Italy’s Amalfi Coast, where history is still alive with its charming fishing ports carved into lush hillsides spilling into the Mediterranean Sea. Many of the people who live in this part of the world have held dear to their customs while the luxury resorts, restaurants and boutiques have grown all around them. The result is an area where charter guests can enjoy historic walks alongside gourmet cuisine, and where it is possible to view architectural treasures while enjoying the most modern of comforts. The combination of old and new is rare and precious, as well as not to be missed.

A good place to begin or end an international yachting charter to the Amalfi Coast is the city of Naples, the birthplace of pizza and home to Europe’s largest remaining historic city center. Walk amid the Neapolitan buildings and view the countless artistic treasures in the museums, some of which proudly tout the city’s leading role in cultural awakenings during the Renaissance and Enlightenment periods of human history.

Take another day to explore the nearby ruins of Pompeii, a Roman city that was destroyed in the two-day eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. and remained buried beneath ash for the next 1500 years. Your yacht charter can include pre-arranged, privately guided tours apart from the regular crowds.

The rest of the Amalfi Coast is far less touristy, with many of the seaside villages being most easily accessible by boat – and therefore catering to the yachting set. Bring your walking shows and stroll along the old stone streets, taking in the licit culture and enjoying a gelato at sunset.

Each day should start with …

A few Amalfi “musts” include taking in the sunset from the top terrace of Positano’s five-star hotel San Pietro di Positano. The panoramic views are breathtaking. The Duomo di Amalfi  (Cathedral of St. Andrew) was built in the early 1200s. Occupying a dramatic location atop a steep flight of stairs, it features an Arab-influenced exterior, and the relics of St. Andrew the Apostle in its crypt. Connected to the cathedral is an older basilica, and the fascinating Cloister of Paradise, both containing medieval murals.  A trip to the Amalfi coast is not complete without tasting some Limoncello! This lemon liqueur is traditionally made from the zest of Femminello St. Teresa lemons, also known as Sorrento lemons.  And of course your charter captain will make sure to cruise to Capri. The iridescent sapphire blue light in the Blue Grotto must be seen to be believed.
