International Yachting Destinations: The Pacific Northwest
One of the world’s most awe-inspiring cruising destinations, the Pacific Northwest is best seen from the deck of a private charter yacht. White-peaked mountains, mysterious blue glaciers, brown bears catching their dinner from a running stream – you can see them all here. There is seemingly no end to the fir-lined bays, inlets and coves where you can anchor without another boat in sight, throw out a fishing line or jump into the kayaks and immerse yourself in the spectacular natural beauty of this part of the world.
But the Pacific Northwest is not without its cosmopolitan pleasures. Your charter yacht vacation might begin in Vancouver, in the Canadian province of British Columbia, a city that in recent years has been used as the backdrop for countless films and TV shows. Take a bicycle ride through Stanley Park or stroll through historic Gastown, considered to be the city’s birthplace. Foodies will love the restaurants specializing in the freshest wild-caught seafood that can be found here.
Across the Strait of Juan de Fuca is the picture-postcard capital of Victoria at the tip of Vancouver Island. The oldest city in Western Canada, it is filled with charming museums and historic architecture. The Fairmont Empress, a grand hotel overlooking the Inner Harbor, is a must – stop for a drink or a cup of tea in the famous, colonial-style Bengal Lounge. If you’re a flower-lover, a side trip to The Butchart Gardens, a 55-acre estate filled with carefully cultivated, breathtaking gardens, is well worth your time.
Another memorable stop along your route is Desolation Sound on mainland British Columbia. When Captain George Vancouver sailed into this remote, deepwater sound in 1792, he must not have taken the time to enjoy its fir-clad coves, soaring waterfalls and abundant wildlife; otherwise, he would never have named it “Desolation Sound.” Today, much of its beauty is protected within a conservation area, Desolation Sound Marine Park, which encompasses more than 63,000 acres of shoreline. This is a kayaker’s paradise and a perfect place to get away from worldly cares.

Here’s a hot tip FROM ONE OF OUR CHARTER EXPERTS ABOUT YOUR PACIFIC NORTH WEST YACHT CHARTER:
Meet your charter yacht in the San Juan Islands by arriving by seaplane. Once you have cruised into Canada and arrive in Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, it is a must to visit Butchart Gardens. Over a century ago, Jenny Butchart began planting what is now one of the world’s premier floral show gardens in order to beautify her family’s exhausted limestone quarry. Each year over a million bedding plants in some 900 varieties offer uninterrupted bloom from March through October. Summer is especially colorful and the gardens have fireworks display on Saturday.
